June is a month of warm weather and sweet beginnings. There’s so much to honor in these short thirty days - a change of seasons, a month of PRIDE…And now, a brand new - to you - federal holiday of Juneteenth, the national celebration of the alleged end of slavery. But you and I both know better when it comes to that history, don’t W/we? Not only had the commemorated enslaved Texans been legally “free” for two years at that point, but they weren’t even the last in the nation for whom the chains of chattel slavery were broken - that wouldn’t happen for some months later in Delaware and Kentucky. And slavery is no relic of the past - it survives to this day through the prison industrial complex, among many others. So this month wont be about celebration for you - it will be about atoning for the sins of your ancestors, forking over backpay in reparations, and committing your life to combatting the disease that is white supremacy.
