Let’s make one thing clear: I’m only here for the power. Yes of course, the money and the gifts and the luxuries I can buy are all lovely. But they’re mere trophies I’m collecting to have and hold as tangible manifestations of my power over you. It’s not my fault that the most real and ultimate form of power exchange occurs through the medium of financial redistribution, but I’ll gladly take it. Because if that’s where your power lies, that’s what I require. These trophies of your hard work and devotion—the expensive lingerie, the designer glasses, the overpriced crystal pen—are all just arbitrary symbols of the power you’ve so eagerly handed over to me. How fortunate you are to have the opportunity to see the physical rewards of your sacrifice. Your power looks better with me, on me, surrounding me. And that’s all it’s ever been about.
