The rain pattered steadily against the small windows of the cottage, a cozy gray backdrop for the warmth and light within. Molly sighed contentedly as she added another log to the fire, watching the flames leap up with renewed vigor. A perfect day for staying in, she thought to herself. She had the day off from her job at the village bookshop, a rare treat. Most days she was run off her feet, helping customers and restocking shelves. But today the weather had conspired to keep everyone indoors, and the shop owner had told her to enjoy the long weekend. Molly was looking forward to curling up with a book by the fire and just relaxing. First, though, there were chores to attend to. She set about tidying the little space, sweeping floors, dusting shelves. The cottage may have been small but it was cozy and home. As she worked, Molly sang softly to herself, enjoying the solitude. Soon the tasks were done and it was time for that book. She selected one from her overflowing shelves - a new historical romance she was eager to dive into. Carrying it and a mug of peppermint tea, Molly settled into her favorite chair by the fire. Just as she opened the cover, there came a loud knocking at the door. Frowning in surprise, she set down her things and went to answer it. Through the rain-spattered window beside the door she saw a figure bundled in a heavy coat, hood drawn up against the downpour. Cautiously, she opened the door a crack. "Can I help you?" The hood was pushed back to reveal a handsome, windswept face with kind eyes. "I'm so sorry to bother you on such a day, but my truck broke down just up the lane. Do you have a phone I could borrow to call for help?" Molly's heart went out to the stranger. "Of course, come in out of the rain. I don't have a phone but you're welcome to wait here warm and dry until help arrives." She opened the door fully to admit him. He smiled gratefully. "Thank you so much, I really appreciate your hospitality." Stepping inside, he removed his coat to reveal a well-built frame. Water dripped from his dark hair onto broad shoulders. "My name is Liam, by the way." "I'm Molly. Please, make yourself at home, help yourself to tea or anything else you need." She took his coat to hang by the fire. Liam poured himself a cup of tea and joined her by the crackling flames. "This cottage is so cozy, I'm envious. You must love living out here away from it all." Molly nodded. "I do, it's peaceful. Though I suppose you'd rather not be stuck here right now!" He chuckled. "No, not ideally. But I'm glad it led me to meet you, at least there's good company." His eyes met hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. Color rose in her cheeks and she had to look away. "Well, hopefully help will arrive soon…”
