I'm unwrapping implements in anticipation of the patient's arrival when I start to feel warm. Is it hot in here? I return to my preparations when I get a pain in my upper abdomen - It's nothing, I say and I continue to carry on. The cramp returns with a vengeance, and I'm overheating and nauseous. I express that I'll need to excuse myself and as I step back I fall to the floor. Next I'm laying back on a table, in a patient gown and wearing a bouffant cap. I struggle, I don't have time for this today, I have to perform surgery. I try to get up but a sharp pain causes me to yield... Clearly I'm not going anywhere. I resign myself to the procedure. As I lay back, with a black beauty rubber mask strapped to my face I start counting backward. 100. 99. 98. 97. 96. 95.... Enjoy several full minutes of watching me, eyes closed, mask on, THEN with mask off, intubated, and with eyes taped closed. When I open my eyes again I can't speak clearly, I mumble. I'm happy things went well and for how wonderful my team is.
