I visit you in pre-op to assure you that you have nothing to worry about. We'll take good care of you throughout you partial prostatectomy. In treating your hyperplasia we hope to relieve some of your urinary issues.  In the ER I make sure you are comfortable, you are connected to an ecg machine and I intubate you before your procedure gets underway.  I double glove, and sterilize you while conversing with the surgical team (implied) then I make a U-shaped opening on your perinieum. I focus on the procedure and realize soon after starting we will actually need to proceed with a full prostatectomy. I pause and ask one of the nurses in the OR with us to prep a foley kit for me. I put a third pair of sterile gloves on, clean your penis thoroughly with 3 swabs and from behind the drape push a catheter (catheter not shown) up into your urethra till it reaches your bladder. I attach a leg bag and secure it. Returning to the procedure I take my time and am careful in removing your entire prostate - it may have been unexpected, but it's the best course of treatment. At least we were able to leave you with your seminal vesicles, which will help your recovery to be a little bit easier. Finally I suture your incision. I greet you in post-op and inform you of the necessary change. I assure you that you'll receive clear instruction and home care for the next few weeks. I tell you that I'll see you again once your incision has healed and we'll review some exercises to aid you in your recovery.
